Netflix's 'Below' attracted a record audience over the weekend, securing 17 million views from its October 8 debut through Sunday evening. This marks the most-viewed debut ever for a Netflix Canadian title.
The limited series, which follows a fisherman (Josh Hartnett) in a Newfoundland hometown terrorized by a mysterious sea creature, also topped the English TV list for the week of October 5-11.
In second place was East of Eden, which nearly doubled its viewership from its opening weekend, reaching 12.6 million views. Zoe Kazan’s adaptation of John Steinbeck’s classic novel had a weaker launch with only 6.5 million views—Netflix’s lowest No. 1 opening since March.
Third place went to Disney’s Percy Jackson and the Olympians Season 1, which landed on Netflix last week and garnered 4.1 million views as it found a new audience. The series' third season will premiere on Disney+ next month.
