As part of this year’s final quarter, Netflix U.S. will be adding a critically acclaimed science fiction comedy to its library, after its release amid the COVID-19 pandemic provided the film with a limited theatrical run.
Save Yourselves! , the 2020 film that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in February and was released in October that year, somewhat ironically, deals with themes of isolation during a state of emergency. Per Bleecker Street’s official synopsis, “Jack ( John Reynolds ) and Su ( Sunita Mani ) are a Brooklyn couple who, like many of their friends, find themselves dependent on technology and unable to put down their phones. Fearing their mindless scrolling may impact their connection with each other, they seize the chance to head to an isolated cabin in the woods, vowing to unplug from the outside world for a week.”
“Sheltered from texts and push notifications, they are blissfully unaware that the planet is under attack,” the logline continues. “As strange events unfold, the couple must figure out a way back to civilization—or what’s left of it.”
In addition to Reynolds and Mani, Ben Sinclair, John Early, Jo Firestone, and Johanna Day also star in the post-apocalyptic comedy. Amy Sedaris and Zenobia Shroff also appear in the film in voice-only roles.
Save Yourselves! made $301,162 at the box office during its theatrical run (per Box Office Mojo ), due to the limited number of theaters open at the height of the pandemic.
