In the 2025 Netflix romance My Oxford Year, Sofia Carson portrays Anna De La Vega, a Latin American student at an elite English university, similar to Carson’s own background. Anna’s Colombian, Argentine, and Cuban heritage is seamlessly woven into her character, rather than being a barrier she overcomes.
Carson, known for four consecutive global Netflix hit films, emphasizes the importance of this natural integration:
"All the Netflix films I’ve been in that have broken streaming records have been led by a Hispanic American actress portraying Latin women," says Carson. "Within those stories, my heritage isn’t a tattooed stereotype but an organic part of existence."
Born to Colombian parents in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Carson recalls her early passion for performing:
"I think back to my earliest memories, as young as 3, and music, storytelling, performing, dancing—it was just what I did. It was undeniable," she reflects.
Since her breakthrough with the Descendants franchise, Carson has built a diverse career encompassing acting, music, advocacy, and production:
- Acting: Purple Hearts (2022), Carry-On (2024), The Life List (2025).
- Music: Self-titled album, songs from films with over 4 billion global streams.
- Advocacy: UNICEF Ambassador, Latin GRAMMY Cultural Foundation Global Ambassador.
"I recognized early on that I had a responsibility to use my voice for goodness and justice," Carson states.
Her upcoming project is Last Night at the Lobster, directed by Wagner Moura, featuring an ensemble cast including Elisabeth Moss and Brian Tyree Henry.
Carson aims to challenge stereotypes: "To be a Latin woman is not one thing… We are a kaleidoscope of cultures, talents, thoughts, and bodies."
