Netflix Embraces Traditional Telly as Streaming Revolution Dries Up

Netflix embraces traditional television as the streaming revolution appears to slow down. As TV executives convened in Edinburgh for the industry's annual gathering, a significant shift became evident. Just prior to the luvvie exodus across the border, new accounts disclosed that Netflix's UK sales surpassed those of ITV for the first time. Netflix revenues reached £2bn last year, while ITV's broadcast and streaming division reported £1.9bn.

This milestone signifies the profound impact streamers have had on the TV industry. However, after years of rapid growth, the streaming boom may be reaching its limit, with subscriber numbers stabilizing and viewers growing impatient with price hikes. As a result, Netflix is turning to an unexpected source for inspiration: traditional television.

In addition to podcasts, gaming, and short-form videos, Netflix is incorporating live sports and ad breaks into its content strategy. This shift indicates that the once-disruptive force in media is now fighting to avoid being disrupted itself.

"The pressing question is whether Netflix can prevent a gradual transition into becoming more like the cable bundle it aimed to replace," remarks Mike Darcey, former chief operating officer at Sky.

Despite its seemingly unstoppable success, Netflix's need to adapt might not be immediately obvious. The company reported global revenues of $12.6 billion.
