The recent trend of video game adaptations has been a boon, bringing titles like Devil May Cry and Resident Evil to a new medium thanks to their established fanbases. Due to the intricate storytelling of modern games, many recent adaptations are based on relatively new titles, including HBO’s The Last of Us and Amazon’s upcoming Norse trilogy of God of War games. However, Hollywood isn’t afraid to look back to the arcade for inspiration too.
Just this year alone, Mortal Kombat 2 has been a success, and Street Fighter is coming soon. But when it comes to the most successful video game franchises, two stand out: Mario with his two billion-dollar animated movies, and Sonic the Hedgehog, who has already inspired three movies and one TV show. But there’s a new project on the horizon that might not be what you expect.

Yesterday, Deadline reported that Netflix is teaming up with Sega for a slate of streaming projects based on video games. While the partnership could lead to various adaptations, only three have been announced: a film based on Crazy Taxi, a live-action adaptation of the upcoming Yakuza prequel game Stranger Than Heaven, and an animated Sonic series that might—or might not—connect to the live-action trilogy.
Details about the series are scarce, but we do know it’s aimed at “upper pre-school audiences” and will replace Netflix’s kid-friendly Sonic Prime, which ran for three seasons. It’ll be the sixth animated Sonic TV series, and if connected to the films, a second show spin-off from the movie franchise, following 2024’s Knuckles series. This is the youngest target audience yet for a Sonic show, which may disappoint older fans, but it further proves that classic video games can draw a diverse crowd of kids and adults alike. As long as this holds true, Hollywood’s video game craze isn’t going anywhere.
