Netflix to Report Box Office for the First Time With Several Films
Netflix will start reporting box office grosses for a handful of movies it releases in theaters, marking a significant shift after years of abstention. Specifically, they will include:
- "La Bola Negra," an upcoming Oscar contender from directors Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, premiering on October 16th with a 47-day theatrical window before streaming on Netflix on December 2nd.
- "The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth" directed by David Fincher, starring Brad Pitt, to be released Imax-exclusive on Thanksgiving.
- "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew" directed by Greta Gerwig, slated for release in February 2027.
- An animated adaptation of "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory", set for November 2027.
This move is a major pivot for Netflix, which previously withheld box office reports for films like "Roma," "The Irishman," and "Glass Onion." Despite generating significant revenue from limited releases, such as "K-Pop Demon Hunters" (which grossed $18 million over two days in August 2025), Netflix has been reluctant to commit to substantial theatrical windows.
This decision comes after much backlash from theater owners and rival studios over the lack of reporting and commitment to theatrical releases.
