Gothika
Gothika is a 2003 psychological thriller starring Halle Berry as a prison psychiatrist who wakes up as an inmate in one of her own observation cells. It's a movie that, in retrospect, perfectly encapsulates the "weird little freak era" for many actors, including Downey Jr. and Penélope Cruz.
If you enjoy jam like this, Gothika arrives on Netflix on September 1st.

Dr. Miranda Grey (Berry) works with inmates at a penitentiary in Connecticut, including Chloe (Penélope Cruz), who had a psychotic break after killing her stepfather. On her way home from work, Miranda swerves to avoid a girl on the road and crashes her car.
Three days later, she awakens in her own prison where her colleague Pete Graham (Downey Jr.) reveals that her husband Doug (Charles Dutton) has been murdered. Miranda is the only suspect but has no memory of what happened and is plagued by what might be hallucinations of the girl from the road.
Then, it emerges that Chloe may not be as insane as Miranda thought.
Gothika is a fittingly eerie thriller for autumn, set in a dreamy, permanent twilight. After an opening scene, Miranda spends much of the film panicked, drugged, or both, and director Mathieu Kassovitz lights and directs accordingly. The prison resembles more a brutalist starship than a real detention center, with dim lighting and scenes that somehow take place in shadows.
