Netflix has announced an unscripted reality series based on the infamous Stanford Prison Experiment. The New Stanford Prison Experiment is set to debut on October 21, consisting of six 45-minute episodes.
According to the official synopsis (first reported by Variety):
"Thirty willing participants enter a real prison and are randomly assigned as guards or prisoners."
The Stanford Prison Experiment, conducted in 1971, involved volunteers playing guards and prisoners in a mock prison. Participants quickly assumed abusive and distressed behaviors, but its findings have since faced significant scientific and ethical challenges.
The series synopsis poses the question:
"Thrust into a system of power, hierarchy, and control, will ordinary people conform to their roles, or will empathy, morality, and individuality prevail?"
This is a developing story; more to follow.
