Unexpected GLP-1 Side Effect: Potential Help for Addictions
Studies reveal that GLP-1 medications, including Ozempic, Mounjaro, Wegovy, and Zepbound, initially prescribed for obesity and diabetes, may also aid individuals struggling with addictions, particularly alcohol addiction.
As 15% of Americans have reported trying a GLP-1 medication, researchers are uncovering its impact on various aspects of life, beyond just diet.
"This drug has been available since 2005," emphasizes Dr. Eugene Lucas, a professor and expert in psychiatric mental health at Wilkes University. “When physicians prescribe these medications for obesity or diabetes patients with concurrent addictive disorders, particularly alcohol addiction, they often observe the patients reducing or stopping their alcohol consumption.”
This discovery stems from a large Swedish study involving over 200,000 individuals, which found a correlation between GLP-1 drug use and decreased alcohol use.
