Whatever Happened to ‘The Babysitter 3’ on Netflix?

Nine years ago today, on Friday, October 13th, 2017, Netflix released The Babysitter (not to be confused with Tubi’s upcoming R.L. Stine adaptation in 2027) — a gleefully gory horror-comedy that launched Samara Weaving into a genre icon and spawned a sequel three years later. That sequel ended with a teaser for more, and McG, the director, has been mum on the topic since.

Here at What’s on Netflix, we often get asked about the status of The Babysitter 3. The short answer? Netflix has never officially announced it, no production has begun, and McG’s last public update was nearly three years ago. But the full story is more nuanced than a simple “no.”

From New Line Castoff to Netflix Cult Favorite

The film, initially intended for New Line Cinema, was originally written by Brian Duffield and snapped up by McG’s Wonderland Sound and Vision. After New Line’s slate became crowded, the film was sold to Boies/Schiller and Wonderland, and Netflix acquired global distribution rights, releasing it on Friday the 13th, just in time for Halloween 2017.

The Story So Far

The Babysitter follows 12-year-old Cole (Judah Lewis) who, after staying up past bedtime, discovers his babysitter Bee (Samara Weaving) leading a satanic blood cult with her friends, played by Bella Thorne, Robbie Amell, Hana Mae Lee, and Andrew Bachelor. The film became a sleeper hit for Netflix, earning positive reviews.

The Babysitter: Killer Queen, the sequel, arrived on September 10th, 2020, jumping ahead two years to a high-school-age Cole. Almost the entire cult returned, including Weaving, who played the finale, with a mid-credits stinger revealing Bee’s devil book still intact.

Reviews were mixed this time around, with a 46% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but McG remained optimistic.

McG’s Stance

McG has never been secretive about wanting a third film, stating in 2019 that the story was built for three acts and, if audiences liked Killer Queen, “we’re ready to do the third one.” In 2023, while promoting Family Switch, he told ComicBook.com that conversations about The Babysitter 3 were still ongoing.

The Cast’s Desire

The cast, too, has expressed interest. Judah Lewis has expressed a desire to see Cole and Phoebe’s relationship develop, and Robbie Amell noted in 2020 that he hoped he’d be considered for a third film if the sequel performed well.

Currently, The Babysitter 3 remains a mystery, with no official word from Netflix.
