Steven Spielberg’s latest extraterrestrial tale, Disclosure Day, is set to land on streaming after its record-breaking opening weekend in theaters. The science fiction epic, starring Emily Blunt, Josh O’Connor, Colman Domingo, Eve Hewson, and Colin Firth, is an original film directed by Spielberg and written by his frequent screenwriting collaborator, David Koepp.
In the film, Blunt and O’Connor portray two strangers who had alien encounters in childhood, only to reconnect under unusual circumstances and strive to reveal the message from life forms on other planets, defying a government effort to suppress this information.
Despite its early success, Disclosure Day received a mixed box office reception, with impressive numbers for an original film, but disappointingly low revenue for a Spielberg film. It currently holds a 79% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, making it one of the director’s more divisive works among critics.
'Disclosure Day’ Netflix-Peacock Universal Deal, Explained
Universal Pictures has a theater-to-streaming deal with Peacock and Netflix, stipulating that films remain in theaters for a maximum of 120 days before transitioning to the two platforms. Once this 120-day period ends, the film moves to Peacock’s streaming service for four months before Netflix acquires the license for 10 months. After these 10 months, Peacock regains the streaming rights to the film.
