Cate Blanchett & Alicia Vikander's Surreal Horror Movie Streams on Netflix Today
By Surya Singh
Rumours, the 2024 film that blends political satire with horror and absurd comedy, is finally available to stream on Netflix today. Directed by Guy Maddin, Evan Johnson, and Galen Johnson, the ensemble cast includes Cate Blanchett, Alicia Vikander, Charles Dance, and Roy Dupuis.
The story follows seven leaders of the world’s wealthiest democracies as they meet for their annual G7 summit. While preparing a statement about a global crisis, they get lost in the woods and encounter increasingly bizarre dangers.
Why Rumours Stands Out from Traditional Political Satire Films?
Traditional political satire often relies on sharp dialogue and familiar government settings to expose leaders' flaws. Rumours takes a different route by placing powerful world leaders in a surreal situation beyond their control. Their attempt to handle an international crisis becomes even more absurd as they face strange events in the forest.
The film seamlessly blends several genres, combining comedy, apocalyptic horror, and soap opera. This unique approach allows it to mock political incompetence while building an atmosphere of uncertainty and danger.
Blanchett portrays Germany's chancellor, while Vikander plays the president of the European Commission. Dance takes on the role of the US President, and Dupuis is Canada’s prime minister. Their characters represent powerful institutions, yet they struggle to respond effectively to the bizarre events unfolding around them.
Rumours premiered at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival out of competition. The film is now available for streaming on Netflix.
