As the seasons change, so do our social calendars. In keeping with my usual seasonal cycle, I’m drawn back to the sofa and the cold, unsettling world of thrillers. Whether it’s the promise of a suitably suspenseful evening in or the reassurance that the genre will appeal to everyone gathered in my living room, there’s no better time to settle in with a gripping watch.
This September, Netflix has given us plenty to choose from, with a mix of films, series and long-awaited new instalments to ensure you get your money’s worth from your subscription. From household names such as Robert De Niro to returning favourites, these are the five new Netflix titles we think you need to add to your watchlist.
‘Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story’
Ella Beatty stars in the fourth instalment of Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan’s hit anthology series. Across the eight episodes, Beatty depicts the infamous Massachusetts woman, and the first female ‘Monster’ in the series, who was accused of murdering her parents. The show has striking contemporary relevancy, exploring female rage and repression and how one woman and her axe changed what the world believed a killer could be.

‘The Whisper Man’
Netflix’s unsettling new crime thriller adapts Alex North’s bestselling novel into a film. Robert De Niro stars as retired detective Pete Willis, who reunites with his estranged son, played by Adam Scott, when his eight-year-old grandson is abducted. Their search uncovers a link to The Whisper Man, a convicted child murderer Pete helped put behind bars 30 years ago. Suspenseful and twisty, The Whisper Man is already looking comfortable on Netflix’s must-watch list.

‘The Last House’
A gripping sci-fi survival thriller from Lupin director Louis Leterrier, starring Greta Lee. One family’s ordinary life quickly descends into a nightmare when they find themselves mysteriously trapped inside their own home. With every door and window sealed shut, they are imprisoned within their own home and forced to watch their limited food supplies dwindle. Claustrophobic, twist-filled and emotionally charged, The Last House looks set to be one of Netflix’s most intriguing thrillers to date.

‘The Gentlemen’ Season 2
Almost three years after the first series, Guy Ritchie’s enthralling gangster drama is returning for a second instalment. Set a year after the events of season one, the new series follows Eddie and Susie as they continue working together in Bobby’s criminal empire – this time overseas, against the glamorous backdrop of Italy. There, they cross paths with a ruthless crime boss and his mercurial fixer. While this stylish take on the world of English aristocracy is less of a high-suspense thriller, it’s a riotous comedy gangster series packed with scandal, scheming and sharp one-liners.
