GLP-1 Weight-Loss Drugs Show Promise for Sleep Apnea
(NewsNation) — Losing weight with GLP-1 drugs could come with another benefit: sleep apnea relief. A new review published in JAMA Otolaryngology adds to a growing body of evidence that the drugs can reduce the severity of obesity-related sleep apnea.
Key Findings:
In clinical trials included in the review, individuals taking tirzepatide (commonly known as Zepbound and Mounjaro) experienced:
- 20 to 24 fewer breathing interruptions per hour compared to those on a placebo.
- Nearly half achieving remission.
Understanding Sleep Apnea:
Obstructive sleep apnea is a breathing disorder that occurs when the throat muscles relax and repeatedly block the airway during sleep, affecting nearly one billion adults worldwide. It’s linked to various health issues, including heart disease and stroke.
The Role of Weight Loss:
The researchers at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center suggest weight loss appears to be a significant factor in the improvement seen with GLP-1 drugs. Losing fat in the tongue and around the throat can help keep the airway open. Obesity is a primary contributor to most obstructive sleep apnea cases, making these findings particularly promising.
Previous Medication Shortcomings:
Until recently, no medication specifically addressed obesity in sleep apnea patients.
