Indonesia Orders Netflix to Pay US$4.3 Million in Music Royalties or Face Shutdown
South China Morning Post (10 September 2026) reports that Indonesia is demanding Netflix pay an estimated 75 billion rupiah (US$4.3 million) in accumulated royalties since its launch in the country in 2016, or risk being shut down.
The National Collective Management Organisation (LMKN), a government-supported agency overseeing Indonesia’s royalty system, made the demand. According to LMKN secretary general Bigi Ramadha Putra, Netflix is required to pay royalties under Indonesia’s 2014 copyright law and subsequent regulations from 2021 and 2025.
If Netflix continues to refuse, LMKN plans to escalate the issue to the Law Ministry and Communications and Digital Affairs Ministry.
“If the regulations are not complied with, we will propose that access to Netflix in Indonesia be shut down,” said Bigi.
