‘Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew’ director explains why Netflix is releasing film in cinemas first

'Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew’ Director Explains Netflix’s Cinema Release Strategy

Netflix traditionally has a limited theatrical release for its films. But for Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew, the streaming giant is making an exception. Greta Gerwig, the director of the film (and known for Barbie), shared the reason behind this decision.

"I told Ted [Sarandos, Netflix CEO] I only know how to make movies for the big screen," Gerwig said. "He said, 'Make the movie for the biggest screen and trust the process.'"

Gerwig aims to evoke a strong emotional response from viewers, hoping they'll laugh, cry, and feel as if they've been on an adventure. "I hope when they leave the theatre, they want to make something... a song, a cake... creating is an act of hope," she added.

Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew will open in cinemas on February 12, 2027, followed by a Netflix release on April 2, 2027.
