Netflix Circling Andres Cantor For 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup Coverage
Netflix is preparing to host its NFL kickoff game in Australia later this week, and it's also in talks to secure talent for its coverage of the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil. As The Hollywood Reporter has learned, the streaming giant is close to sealing a deal with a soccer broadcasting legend: Andres Cantor.
The streaming giant is eyeing Cantor to provide Spanish-language commentary for the event, and he is also expected to have a role in the draw, scheduled for December. Netflix declined to comment on the matter.
Cantor, a renowned soccer announcer known for his signature "¡goooooooll!" call, has called 14 FIFA World Cups, including the inaugural Women’s World Cup final in 1991. He has been with NBCUniversal's Spanish-language media division, Telemundo, for 26 years, though his contract is set to end soon, allowing for a potential move to Netflix. Previously, he called games for Univision.
With FIFA expected to bring its World Cup media rights up for bidding later this year, covering both men's and women's tournaments, English and Spanish rights, broadcasters like Cantor would likely want to maintain flexibility.
