Netflix, Ester Expósito, and Mar Coll Adapt 'La Regenta' With a Fresh Female Twist

Netflix, Ester Expósito, and Locarno Winner Mar Coll are setting 'La Regenta', a classic Spanish novel, into motion with a contemporary twist. Production began on October 23, 2026, under the leadership of producer María Zamora at Elastica Films.

The adaptation, a fresh female perspective on a renowned masterpiece, is based on the novel by Clarín, now hailed as a Spanish literary gem, second only to Don Quixote.

La Regenta follows Ana Ozores, a young woman married to a much older man, who finds herself in a stifling provincial town where every move is watched and judged. As she seeks meaning in her loveless existence, she becomes entangled in a web of desire, faith, and social power.

This project marks Netflix's continued interest in revered Spanish-language literary properties, following the success of their adaptations of One Hundred Years of Solitude and The Eternaut.

Ester Expósito brings star power to the film, having gained fame from her role in Elite. Mar Coll, a Locarno winner, directs this modern interpretation of the classic novel.
