The reign of Empress Elisabeth is coming to an end. The third and final season of The Empress (originally titled Die Kaiserin) will return on November 12, 2026.
Since its debut, The Empress has been one of Netflix’s most successful German-language series, captivating audiences with its lavish costumes and intense chemistry between Devrim Lingnau (Elisabeth) and Philip Froissant (Franz). Season 2, which launched in November 2024, spent five weeks in the global top 10s. From 2023 to June 2026, seasons 1 and 2 have amassed 462 million hours watched on Netflix, equating to over 82.3 million views.
What will happen in The Empress Season 3?
The final season appears to be about the unraveling of the empire and the couple themselves. Here’s a recap of the first two seasons:
Season 1:
- The Storming of the Hofburg: After Elisabeth's romantic wedding to Emperor Franz Joseph, court life becomes a golden cage. She fights for her self-determination while facing pressure from her mother-in-law Sophie and unrest among the people.
Season 2:
- Power Struggles and the Fires of War: The young marriage is tested by the pressure for a male heir, impending wars, and the loss of their child. Elisabeth learns to use her political voice as the situation escalates.
Netflix has also released a detailed synopsis for Season 3:
After the devastating Sardinian War, Emperor Franz (Philip Froissant) returns traumatized. Guilt over the loss of thousands of men weighs heavily on him. Elisabeth (Devrim Lingnau Islamoğlu) tries to stand by her husband but in vain. Franz's infidelity further shakes their marriage, while resistance at court and health issues force Elisabeth to leave Vienna and recover on a distant island.
By chance, the Empress meets the leader of the Hungarian revolution, Count Andrássy (Dejan Bućin), on her journey.
