Netflix's New Documentary Examines the Cornell 7 Case and College Sexual Assault Policies

Netflix's latest documentary, Instadocs: Jane Doe v. Cornell, delves into the complex issue of sexual assault on college campuses. It explores the case of Jane Doe, a former Cornell University student who accused seven fellow students of sexual assault in 2024.

The Cornell 7 Case

In October 2024, Jane Doe alleged that she was drugged and gang-raped at the Chi Phi fraternity house. She reported the incident to campus police three weeks later. Initially, the district attorney declined to file criminal charges, stating that the police report lacked evidence of drugging or gang rape.

Doe then filed a civil lawsuit against the seven accused men and others. As a result of Cornell's internal Title IX investigation, disciplinary actions were taken, including expulsions, and the Chi Phi fraternity chapter was banned from campus.

Current Status

The criminal investigation has been reopened, and New York Attorney General Letitia James is serving as a special prosecutor. Cornell has also announced an independent review of its handling of the case. The case remains under investigation, and the allegations have not been proven in a criminal trial.

Key Interviewees

The documentary features interviews with Sophia Dasser, editor-in-chief of The Cornell Daily Sun, and Cereese Qusba, senior editor. Other notable interviewees include New York Gov. Kathy Hochul, Jane Doe's attorney Thomas Giuffra, former Brown University Title IX coordinator Amanda Walsh, a former Cornell fraternity president, and a recent Cornell graduate who went through the university's Title IX process.
