Introduction
Jasmine Guy, who played Whitley Gilbert on the iconic show A Different World, opens up about her experience reprising her role over 30 years after the original series ended. The revival series is now streaming on Netflix.
Reviving Whitley Gilbert
Jasmine Guy, alongside her co-stars Cree Summer and Darryl M. Bell, shared their thoughts on bringing back their beloved characters with PEOPLE. Despite her love for the character, Guy admitted she felt nervous about reviving Whitley.
"We've been waiting for a long time," Guy told PEOPLE. "We didn't believe it. I didn't get excited until I signed my contract... because we had a couple of false [starts]."
Behind the Scenes
The filming process was a departure from the original series, as Guy explained:
"We're also shooting it differently than we did the first one, which was on a sound stage with an audience. This is one camera. It looks more like a movie. And we're doing it with coverage, many takes. So I'm like, 'This isn't funny,' after five takes of something, because you're losing the spontaneity of the line. And it was really funny! I was laughing at the screening."
Cree Summer and Darryl M. Bell echoed her sentiments, acknowledging the adjustment to the new filming dynamic.
"It's so broad. We were doing a four-camera sitcom. It's very broad. And then when you get to do it this way, the characters do have to... well, first of all, we're older, so the characters have evolved, but also, it's a different approach to the acting," said Summer.
"I will say, it felt like putting on a comfortable pair of shoes to say, 'Here we are again.' Because we all see each other outside of work, so for all of us to be back together, on the set together, and being these characters again, that's the easy part," added Bell.
Netflix's 'A Different World'
Netflix's revival introduces a new generation of freshmen navigating college life at an HBCU campus, while longtime fans have been delighted to see familiar faces returning to the Hillman College setting.
