Author Sherryll Woods published the first of her "Sweet Magnolias" books in 2007, but she had been writing romance and mystery novels since the 1980s. The "Sweet Magnolias" novels were adapted into a Netflix TV series that premiered in 2020, starring JoAnna Garcia Swisher, Brooke Elliott, and Heather Headley. The show, structured like an old-fashioned primetime soap, followed the three South Carolina women and their evolving relationships and familial dramas.

"Sweet Magnolias" concluded its run in June 2026 after five seasons, with its final season consisting of just 10 episodes. According to Deadline, Netflix decided to cancel the series in favor of a new show, Ladies of the House, being developed by Swisher and Sweet Magnolias creator Sheryl J. Anderson. The decision was based on cost efficiency.

The cast, however, expressed their sadness about the show's end. Swisher shared on Instagram:

"How do you say goodbye to something that became so much more than a job?... 'Sweet Magnolias' came into my world during a chapter that held some of my deepest loss and, somehow, some of my greatest joy... These people gave me somewhere to belong."

Netflix's approach of renewing shows for one season at a time, gauging their viability, has led to many beloved series being canceled before their time. While "Sweet Magnolias" might be gone, its 50 episodes remain a testament to its enduring appeal.
